Do's and Don'ts of Senior Photography

July 14, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

Senior sessions are under way and I get lots of questions about what to wear, when to book, times of day for the session, needing two sessions a year and so much more.

I am happy to break down all the Do's and Don'ts of what all you hear.

Mommas I hope this helps y'all out :))

1. Lets tackle when you should book your sessions.

  • Don't- Book close to when you want your pictures taken
  • Do- Book months ahead of time. Your photographer won't let you forget about the session. This way you are more likely guaranteed a date around the time you are looking. You always get game schedules etc at the start of the school year so coordinate with that. Or even book a session in the summer and have a jump on it before school even starts.

2. What time of day for your session.

  • Don't- You think you can only take pictures during the golden hour.
  • Do- Know the time of day all depends on the season. During Fall/Winter months you can shoot most any time of the day. Its so cold and somehow that makes the sun not shine as bright. During Spring/Summer it is best to do the pictures early in the mornings or late in the evenings due to the heat more than anything. Nobody wants to melt in the middle of the photo shoot. Cloudy days are a good thing… rain is the only reason we worry.

3. Should you have one or two sessions. This one is a little more of your opinion than a fact vs fiction

  • Don't- You thin you can only have one session a year.
  • Do- Know you can have as many as you want. Most of my clients have a summer/fall or fall/spring shoot this way you have sports through out the entire year that are captured, choir, plays, FFA, and everything else that they are involved in.

4. What you should bring to the shoot.

  • Don't- Only bring one change of clothes, and nothing else the photographer will have everything you need.
  • Do- Bring lots of changes of clothes. Your mood changes about what you think looks good, and some things go better with certain back drops. Also don't be afraid to bring your own props, these make the pictures 100% unique to you. Bring any jerseys, shoes, awards you've won in High school that you are proud of, FFA Uniform, Show animals, instruments etc… Anything that makes you, well you…

5. What you should wear/bring…. Now this is THE big one. Ladies First.

  • Don't- Wear tops or bottoms that make you look boxy… Wild crazy prints this will pull the focus off of your face…. Wear empire waists that are high in the front this will give you an appearance that you are larger than you really are… Wear ruffles across your chest if you have a large bust…. Wear wrinkly clothes, I can't iron your clothes in photoshop sadly, and if I take a close up shot you don't want it ruined because of silly wrinkles… Forget to wear jewelry, details are important.... Even nails have them clean... A different pair of jeans for every top you bring... Only Dresses… Only School branded clothes…. A lot of people to the shoot
  • Do- Wear clothes that enhance your shape, it doesn't have to be "sexy" or skin tight just flattering… Wear a cardigan or solid color blazer to tone down a print (plus this gives us something to play with during the shoot)… Wear an empire waist that falls at your natural waist… Wear ruffles if you have a small chest (this will give you some camouflage and appearance of a little larger chest)… Wear jewelry that can be paired back to multiple outfits (Accessories are FUN!) Your shoes can be the pop of color in your outfit… If you love hats BRING THEM : )

Most important guys and gals wear the clothes that reflect you! This is all about you!

GUYS! Its all about you now!

  • Don't- Only wear button up shirts or Tee Shirts…  Wear wild Crazy prints they will pull the focus off your face… Wear baggy clothes they look very messy… Wear wrinkly clothes I can't iron your clothes in photoshop sadly, and if I take a close up shot you don't want wrinkles to ruin it… Wear things that aren't your style (this is all about you)… Forget your jerseys, instruments, awards etc… Bring only one pair of jeans
  • Do- Wear layers… Wear lots of solids.. Wear clothes that fit… Bring multiple pairs of jeans… Bring Jerseys, Sportswear, Awards, Instruments, Show Animals, FFA Gear… Wear things that show who you are… Bring multiple pairs of shoes (tennis shoes, cleats, boots, etc…)

Now heres a quick list of things to do prior to the day before and morning of (this does not mean these things have to be done…)

  • Get eyebrows/lip waxed
  • Manicure/Pedicure
  • Spray Tan
  • Hair Cut/Color
  • Pick your clothes out a week in advance at least… Send me pics I love to see what we are working with
  • Don't be afraid to let me know of a cool spot you'd like to take pictures before your session starts so we can work it in

If you find poses you like let me know, and please please please practice the ones that you like. And don't be nervous in front of the camera or I will make you dance and tell me nursery rhymes while you do to loosen you up. Its ok to have confidence while you are posing. When I put you in a pose we aren't playing freeze tag…I hope that games still around…you are allowed to move around.

I am sure there is more that I am skipping over, but I know that I have hit all the major points.

Hope this helps you and that I get to see you through my lens : )

XoXo
